Volunteer Positions

Parent Volunteers are an integral part of summer swimming. We cannot run meets if there are not enough volunteers. Each family must volunteer at multiple meets throughout the season. Please note that when you volunteer, it is only for half of the meet (although we welcome volunteers who can work the whole meet as well).

  • Announcer – Announce each event and swimmer’s name before each race.
    • Seated position. Announcers should feel comfortable speaking in front of others and bring lots of energy to the job. A great announcer makes the meets more fun!
    • Home Meets – 1/half, 2 total
  • Clerk of Course – Line up swimmers 12 and under before their races.
    • Freestyle and backstroke are very busy with breaststroke and butterfly being much calmer.
    • All Meets – 3/half, 6 total
  • Data Entry – Put each swimmer’s time into the computer at the scorer’s table.
    • Seated position. Volunteer should feel comfortable using a computer. Data entry also acts as scorekeeper as scores are automatically calculated. This is a change from previous years as the Freestate Swim League will now be using Meet Maestro. You will work with a volunteer from the other team to complete this job.
    • All Meets – 1/half, 2 total
  • Ribbon Writers – One volunteer will write the name and time of swimmers from the first heat that placed first, second, or third on the backs of the ribbons. The other will do the same for heat winners.
    • Home Meets – 2/half, 4 total
  • Runners – As each race finishes, record the sweep from the officials and the times from each lane.
    • Runners should be prepared to move very quickly and be on their feet.
    • Home Meets – 2/half, 4 total
  • Timers – Use a stopwatch to time each race.
    • Timers should feel comfortable standing in one spot on the pool deck for an extended period of time.
    • Home Meets – 4/half, 8 total
    • Away Meets – 3/half, 6 total
